Perfect foundation? Not today.
Flawless skin? Forget about it.
For once, the goal is to make your makeup look a little… terrifying.
Halloween is the perfect excuse to step outside the traditional beauty box and explore a completely different side of makeup. Instead of covering a bruise, you’re creating one. Instead of making skin look smooth, you might be adding cuts, wounds, texture, and other creepy details.
Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of special effects makeup.

When Makeup Becomes Movie Magic
Think about the last horror movie or Halloween character that genuinely made you do a double take.
Chances are that makeup had something to do with it.
Special effects makeup—often called SFX makeup—is all about transformation. Artists can use makeup techniques and materials to create the illusion of injuries, aging, unusual textures, fantasy characters, monsters, zombies, and much more.
It’s where beauty skills meet storytelling.
And unlike an everyday makeup look, sometimes the more imperfect, bruised, bloody, or downright strange the finished result looks, the better!
Creating a Character From Scratch
One of the coolest parts of experimenting with SFX makeup is that you’re not simply applying makeup. You’re creating a character.
Maybe your character has just escaped a zombie apocalypse.
Maybe they’ve been wandering through a haunted house for the past three days.
Maybe they’re the villain in a horror movie that doesn’t exist… yet.
Before picking up a brush, think about the story you’re trying to tell. Where has your character been? What happened to them? What details would make someone instantly understand their story?
A strategically placed bruise, cut, shadow, or texture can completely change the way a character looks—and feels.
That’s where creativity really takes over.

The Beauty Industry Isn’t Always About Looking “Pretty”
Beauty education can open the door to much more creativity than people sometimes realize.
Hair, makeup, nails, skincare, fashion, photography, entertainment—they can all overlap in unexpected ways.
At American Beauty School, creativity and exploration have been part of the school’s approach to beauty education for decades. Whether you’re interested in cosmetology, esthetics, nails, or simply discovering another creative side of yourself, experimenting with something outside your comfort zone can help you look at beauty differently.
And SFX makeup definitely qualifies as outside the box.
Ready to Join the Undead?
Now for the creepy part.
Just in time for Halloween, American Beauty School is hosting Zombie Bootcamp on October 21, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Link)
This beginner-friendly introduction to special effects makeup will explore how to create gory cuts, bruises, and undead-inspired looks. No previous SFX experience is required, making it an approachable way to get your first taste of horror makeup.
The workshop costs $35 and takes place at American Beauty School in the Bronx.
Think less “classroom lecture” and more “What kind of zombie can I create?”
Give Your Halloween Look a Backstory
Anyone can throw on a costume.
But creating a character?
That’s where things get interesting.
This Halloween, challenge yourself to think beyond the costume hanging in your closet. Experiment with textures. Play with makeup. Create an injury. Invent a character. Give that character a story.
You might discover that makeup is even more fun when the goal isn’t perfection.
